English: I gave a talk yesterday at the University Inter-Âges of Versailles, west of Paris, on the theme of open source software, which started as a University phenomenon and which now has "percolated" into the mainstream. It was a very rewarding experience to have an audience of rather old persons (people doing with the "politically correct" say "seniors" or "elderly", but I think that age is not a defect). I have felt that the audience was very receptive, and, interestingly, rather much more expressive than the young people that I have to do when I teach in more conventional universities. The questions were interesting and I felt clear receptiveness to general concerns about the excesses of the state surveillance that we have come to know with the recent scandals NSA / PRISM. Français : j'ai donné une conférence hier dans le cadre de l'Université Inter-Âges de Versailles sur le thème de l'informatique libre, qui est partie du milieu universitaire et qui maintenant a "percolé" jusque dans le grand public. Ce fut une expérience très enrichissante que d'avoir un auditoire de personnes plutôt âgées (les gens qui manient le "politiquement correct" diraient "seniors", mais je considère que l'âge n'est pas une tare). Je les ai senties très réceptives, et, de manière intéressante, plutôt beaucoup plus expressives que les jeunes gens auxquels j'ai à faire quand j'enseigne dans le cadre d'une université plus conventionnelle. Les questions furent intéressantes et j'ai senti une réceptivité certaine quant aux inquiétudes relatives aux dérives de l'Etat-surveillance que l'on a appris à connaître avec les scandales récents NSA/PRISM. Back from the EuPA2013 conference in Saint-Malo. Had a great time with Vivien Berthelot, who is doing his PhD thesis with me on DNA repair complex recapitulation in vitro on homemade chromatographic phases. I had the pleasure to notice how large the support for Free Open Source Software has become nowadays in the protein chemistry/mass spectrometry/proteomics community. This is very good news. I had the opportunity to explain my Debian packages for all FLOSS in mass spectrometry approach to a number of congressists. Olivier Langella (INRA, France) was there to show off the massChroQ software suite he has been coding since a number of years. we still have to package that software for Debian... One evening, we went to drink beer while talking about data processing and we decided to try his mass data workflow, that is based entirely on FLOSS, for our data about DNA repair complexes (the mass spec facility were provide our samples with works with Mascot). I met Ruedi Aebersold and briefly talked to him about software development platforms and we got to mention Hannes Roest. Hannes is the release manager of the OpenMS software project with whom I am in contact for the packaging of this very large software project in Debian. Funny how the world is not so large...

New developments in the massXpert mass spectrometry software environment. New massXpert release:
- Implemented feature that allows one to enter a coordinates string in the sequence editor window so as to select a specific sequence or make a multi-region selection or make a multi-selection region.
- Implemented the "primary selection" clipboard for UNIX/GNU/LINUX platforms.
- Refactored the mz lab GUI so as to greatly simplify its use.
- Updated the french translation.

New developments in the massXpert mass spectrometry software environment. In the context of a collaboration with Dr Marie Erard (LCP), I have developed a much better interfacing of the massXpert-based simulations (polymer cleavage, oligomer fragmentation and arbitrary mass searches) with the XpertMiner module. It is now possible to export the data from any of the simulations to the MzLab environment of the XpertMiner module, without loosing important information, like the coordinates of the oligomers, which allow one to highlight the corresponding region in the polymer sequence editor. All this is documented in detail in the massXpert.pdf user manual.
